I always bring fresh baked cookies to my performances, but also. . .

I’ve been doing this thing where I sit on an inflatable couch at random locations giving out cookies. It’s been a great way to meet people and make friends. Sure, I hope it creates interest in my music, but it has been a very rewarding venture all on its own.

No one has ever convinced me to like someone’s music by just talking about it. Neither have sexy posters, or flyers stuck to my windshield. Music is not an easy living. In such an ad-saturated culture, it’s understandable that musicians desperately use the same invasive tactics of repetitive and invasive marketing as Coca-Cola and Urban Outfitters, albeit on a smaller scale.

But you are not a market!

I prefer to play as little of that game as possible. I don’t think anyone deserves attention without giving it back. Musicians are far more effective when they connect with people instead of trying to convince everyone of their greatness. But what do I know? I’m not famous.

Promoting free cookies is a lot easier and more fun than promoting music anyway.
